Abertillery Blaenau Gwent RFC would like to thank the sponsors for the coming season
Just 85 days on from celebrating one of the best seasons in the Club's history, when winning 21 of 22 League matches en route to the Division Two East title, it is back, if not to square one then to Division One as preparations begin in earnest with the first of three warm up friendly fixtures with the visit of Croesyceiliog to The Park on Saturday
Two more will follow on subsequent weekends with visits to Penclawdd and Caldicot- Penclawdd is a bit of a nightmare memory for one former Green and White player, outside half Keith James whose kick was charged down at the Cocklers' ground for a try which handed Newport their most embarrassing Cup defeat when the Black and Ambers lost nil-4 in November nineteen eighty!
Training has been going well and there have been one or two additions to a squad which,while very effective in last season's surge, was short of cover in a few areas We hope the new players make as much of an impact as Graham Heath did last winter!
The League campaign begins on September 3rd with a visit to the Stores Field, Risca and Nelson will be the first home fixture on the 10th, the month continuing with a trip to Blaenavon and an eagerly anticipated derby with the previous Division Two champions, Nantyglo!
The Club face a WRU Plate draw on 8th October, another round on the last Saturday of the month
Newer names on the fixture list bring matches against Rhydyfelin and Ynysybwl from the Pontypridd area, Penallta and Brecon, and while one or two of these have formidable reputations the players can enter the season with confidence and the expectation of a successful winter's rugby, Come on Aber!
Van Morrison, at a Cardiff concert some years ago said about old hits---"that is history, this is the future!" Let's hope our future is a hit!
